When Your Emotion Isn’t the Whole Story

Have you ever had a reaction that felt bigger than the situation? Someone says something that rubs you the wrong way. A text goes unanswered. A conversation doesn’t go the way you expected. Suddenly, you’re angry, hurt, anxious, or overwhelmed. The feeling is real. But what if the feeling isn’t the whole story?

A trigger can start an emotional reaction, but it doesn’t always explain everything that’s happening inside of you. Maybe you’re already exhausted. Maybe something that happened earlier in the day is still sitting with you. Maybe the situation reminds you of something from your past. Maybe you were carrying an expectation that wasn’t met.

Sometimes the thing happening right now is only one piece of the emotional picture.

This doesn’t mean your reaction is negative or that you should talk yourself out of what you’re feeling. It means there’s an opportunity to get curious.

Pocket Wisdom

Instead of immediately asking, “Why am I reacting like this?”

Try slowing down and asking:

What happened?

What am I assuming about what happened?

What else might be true?

What information am I missing?

Those questions create space between the feeling and the response.

And that space matters. Think back to the Emotional Boardroom.

One voice may speak very loudly and very quickly. Anger might be demanding that you respond. Anxiety might be predicting everything that could go wrong. Fear might be telling you to get away.

Listen to the voice.

But don’t let one voice make the entire decision.

Your emotions can give you important information without having all of the information.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is allow the emotion to speak while you gather the rest of the story. Because responding thoughtfully doesn’t mean ignoring how you feel. It means giving yourself enough space to decide what you want to do with what you feel.

Wisdom to Carry With You

  • A feeling can tell you something important without telling you everything.
  • Feel it. Pause. Gather information. Then choose.
