We often talk about emotions as though they’re problems to solve.
We’re angry, so we need to calm down.
We’re anxious, so we need to stop worrying.
We’re sad, so we need to cheer up.
But what if emotions aren’t problems to eliminate? What if they’re information worth listening to?
Imagine your internal world as a boardroom. At the head of the table is you. Around the table are your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, experiences, relationships, and environment. Each one has something to contribute to the conversation.
Anger might be telling you that something feels unfair or that a boundary has been crossed. Fear might be alerting you to something that doesn’t feel safe. Sadness may be pointing toward loss or something that matters deeply to you. And then there’s anxiety.
Anxiety is a little different. It isn’t a core emotion in the same way that fear, sadness, anger, happiness, or disgust are. Anxiety can involve several things at once, anticipation, physical sensations, thoughts about what might happen, and sometimes fear. That’s important because the information anxiety brings to the table doesn’t necessarily mean you need to act immediately.
Pocket Wisdom
Think about the famous line from Ghost: “You in danger, girl.” Sometimes anxiety really is alerting you to something worth paying attention to. But a warning isn’t necessarily a prediction of what will actually happen.
The goal isn’t to silence anxiety or any other emotion. It’s to listen, become curious, gather more information, and then decide what you want to do. Because here’s the thing about a boardroom: everyone gets a voice, but not everyone gets to make the final decision.
Your emotions deserve a seat at the table. So do your thoughts. Your body. Your experiences. Your relationships. Your environment.
But you are still the person at the head of the table.

Wisdom to Carry With You
- You don’t have to stop feeling in order to start choosing.
