Why Some Experiences Drain You More Than Others

Why some experiences drain us more than others; Digital overload; Mental effort; High-demand activities: constant attention, multi-tasking; Overwhelmed & depleted; Financial stress.

Have you ever finished one task feeling accomplished, while another left you completely depleted even though they took the same amount of time? It’s easy to assume our energy is determined by how much we do. But often, it’s influenced just as much by what we’re carrying while we do it. Our thoughts, expectations, emotions, and sense of responsibility all affect how much energy an experience requires.

Imagine two people attending the same family gathering. One leaves feeling connected and joyful. The other leaves emotionally exhausted. The difference may not be the gathering itself. It may be the invisible weight each person carried into the room.

Perhaps one person felt free to enjoy the time together, while the other felt responsible for keeping the peace, saying the right thing, or making sure everyone else was okay. This invisible work is often called emotional labor, the energy we spend managing emotions, expectations, and relationships. Add perfectionism, people-pleasing, or the pressure of “I should,” and even ordinary moments can feel heavy.

When we become curious about what we’re carrying, we can respond with greater compassion instead of asking, “Why can’t I handle this?” Sometimes the question isn’t whether you’re doing too much. It’s whether you’re carrying more than you realize.

Awareness doesn’t remove every challenge, but it helps us understand where our energy is going.

Affirmation Visual

“I can release the pressure to carry more than is mine and respond to myself with compassion.”

Wisdom to Carry With You

  • Energy is shaped by more than your schedule.
  • Thoughts and expectations influence how experiences feel.
  • Emotional labor is real and often invisible.
  • Curiosity helps us understand our energy with greater compassion.

This week, notice the invisible weight you carry throughout your day. Pay attention to the expectations you place on yourself and the responsibilities you quietly assume. You don’t have to solve everything today. Simply begin by asking, “What am I carrying that no one else can see?” Sometimes naming the weight is the first step toward setting it down.
